COPPELL - (June 26, 2025) – U.S. airstrikes over the weekend caused petroleum futures to spike Sunday evening, with oil creeping up to $78/bbl. That quickly dissipated by Monday, and as of this morning, oil prices are back to what they were pre-conflict. With Independence Day around the corner, and 4.9 million Texans preparing to hit the road next week, gas prices may increase slightly.
The statewide gas price average in Texas is $2.82 per gallon for regular unleaded fuel, according to the AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch. That price remains the same as one week ago and is 26 cents less per gallon compared to this day last year. Of the major metropolitan areas surveyed in Texas, drivers in El Paso are paying the most on average at $3.02 per gallon while drivers in the Lubbock area are paying the least at $2.67 per gallon. Texas currently has the third cheapest gas price average in the nation behind Mississippi ($2.73) and Oklahoma ($2.81).
The national average for a gallon of regular gasoline is $3.22, two cents higher than last week and 27 cents cheaper than this time last year.
“As drivers prepare for 4th of July road trips, AAA Texas reminds them to maximize their vehicle’s fuel efficiency by making sure their cars and trucks are well-maintained, including properly inflated tires,” said AAA Texas Corporate Communications Manager Doug Shupe. “Drivers can also increase their vehicle’s fuel efficiency by obeying speed limits because the faster a vehicle is moving, the more fuel it burns.”
