AAA Texas: Catastrophic Storm Sends Gas Prices Rising

(Coppell, TX) – The statewide gas price average in Texas is $2.26 for a gallon of regular unleaded fuel, according to the AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch. That price is four cents higher than yesterday and is 12 cents more per gallon compared to this day last week.

Of the major metropolitan areas surveyed in Texas, drivers in Dallas are paying the most on average per gallon at $2.37, while drivers in Beaumont are paying the least at $2.17 per gallon. The national average price for a gallon of regular unleaded is $2.45, which is five cents more than yesterday and 10 cents more than the price per gallon at this same time last week.

While retail prices are rising, motorists may see additional increases at the pump in some areas. The near-term combinations of Labor Day, increased demand and the tightened supply levels in the Gulf means motorists are likely to see gas prices increase up to 15 cents in the coming week. It’s important to note this will be a short-term, noticeable spike. Market analysts expect prices to drop by mid to late September, when refiners should be back online. Price increases do not reflect a shortage of gasoline supplies in the Gulf Coast region or across the country. Overall stocks in the Gulf are above average levels and will be available to drivers once power is restored and area roads are cleared.

“Our thoughts are with everyone who has been impacted by Harvey and the devastation left behind by this powerful storm,” said AAA Texas Senior Public Affairs Specialist Daniel Armbruster. “With reports of temporary gas shortages at some stations around Texas, drivers are encouraged to plan ahead for any road trips and should not allow their vehicle’s gas level to fall below a quarter of a tank.”

Corpus Christi refiners appear to have survived without major incidents or damage. Many refineries are restarting, including Valero’s Three Rivers and Corpus Christi refineries, though the re-start is expected to take a week to complete. In the Houston area, it is still unclear when refinery damage will be assessed and local roads will be cleared and deemed safe by first responders. Currently, OPIS has received reports of minor damage at a few Houston area refineries (fire, flooding at some plants).

“No doubt, Harvey has impacted operations and access to refineries in the Gulf Coast.  However a clear understanding of overall damage at the Houston area refineries is unknown,” said Armbruster. “Despite the country’s overall oil and gasoline inventories being at or above 5-year highs, until there is clear picture of damage and an idea when refineries can return to full operational status, gas prices will continue to increase.”
