AAA Texas: Statewide Gas Price Average Increases One Cent Ahead of Memorial Day

(Coppell, TX) – The statewide gas price average in Texas is $2.19 for a gallon of regular unleaded fuel, according to the AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch. That price is one cent more than last week and 12 cents more per gallon than last year. Of the major metropolitan areas surveyed in Texas, drivers in El Paso and Ft. Worth are paying the most on average at $2.21 per gallon while drivers in Beaumont and Texarkana are paying the least at $2.13 per gallon. The national average price for a gallon of regular unleaded is $2.37 which three cents more than last week and seven cents more per gallon than last year.

Heading into Memorial Day weekend, gas prices are increasing. Analysts say the increases are likely the result of rising demand and crude oil prices. AAA Texas forecasts that more than 3.2 million Texans are planning to take a Memorial Day trip this weekend. The state forecast breakdown of total travelers reports 2.8 million Texans will drive to their destination – which is 2.4 percent more drivers than last year. The rise in road travel could pressure pump prices to continue to increase into the summer months. Every state in the South and Southeast, including Texas, touts gasoline prices below the national average.

“Texans are paying about $31 to fill up a 14-gallon tank, which is the size of a typical family sized vehicle,” said AAA Texas/New Mexico representative Sarah Schimmer. “Vacationers can stop by any AAA Texas branch to speak with travel agents about a variety of planning resources before they leave, and AAA encourages motorists to visit with AAA Approved Auto Repair facilities to address any auto maintenance or repairs before taking a long road trip.”
