AAA Texas: Statewide Gas Price Average Decreases Three Cents This Week

(Coppell, TX) – The statewide gas price average in Texas is $2.18 for a gallon of regular unleaded fuel, according to the AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch. That price is three cents less than last week and 19 cents more per gallon than last year. Of the major metropolitan areas surveyed in Texas, drivers in El Paso and Galveston are paying the most on average at $2.24 per gallon while drivers in Amarillo and Texarkana are paying the least at $2.08 per gallon. The national average price for a gallon of regular unleaded is $2.34 which is three cents less than last week and 14 cents more per gallon than last year.

The trending decline in retail gas prices is due to an unseasonable oversupply of gasoline in the U.S. market, record high refinery production rates, moderate demand and a recent drop in crude oil prices. Globally there is budding consensus to extend OPEC production cuts beyond the June 30 deadline and into 2018, signaling that OPEC and non-OPEC producers are willing to take necessary steps to rebalance the market. Analysts say OPEC and its partners must continue to restrict supply if their market correction goals are to be achieved. Only time will tell if supply restrictions and rising demand will shorten the oversupply. Gas prices in the South and Southeast region, including Texas, dropped slightly compared to last week. The southern region of the country continues to post the least expensive prices in the nation.

“Texans are paying an average of $30 to fill up an average family sized vehicle with a 14-gallon tank,” said AAA Texas/New Mexico representative Sarah Schimmer. “Nationally motorists are paying $2.76 more per fill up.”
