AAA Texas Reminds Homeowners to Prepare Now for Emergencies Down the Road

Homeowners can save money during Emergency Preparation Supplies Sales Tax Holiday

(Coppell, TX) – Flooding, tornadoes, hailstorms, and hurricanes can cause havoc for Texas homeowners. Preparing for those emergencies now can save money and hassle when natural disasters strike. The 2017 Emergency Preparation Supplies Tax Holiday in Texas will begin at 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, April 22, and end at midnight on Monday, April 24.

During the emergency supplies tax free weekend homeowners can purchase generators, portable radios, flashlights, tarps, ladders and storm shutters tax free. Using these types of supplies to prevent further damage in storms can save lives and money. According to the Texas Office of Public Insurance Counsel research shows that every dollar spent on mitigation saves four to five dollars in losses.

“With the hurricane season not too far off, this is a good opportunity for Texans to update their emergency plans and purchase the supplies they will need during an emergency,” said AAA Texas/New Mexico Representative Sarah Schimmer. “The upcoming tax savings weekend will help people save money when stocking up on new supplies and replacing items that may have expired or be damaged.”

AAA Texas along with disaster experts, consumer advocates, and retailers supported the 2015 bill which created the Emergency Preparation Supplies Tax Holiday. The Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts Office has a complete list of items that qualify for the tax-free exemption at https://comptroller.texas.gov/taxes/publications/98-1017.php.
