AAA Texas: Statewide Gas Price Average Increases Six Cents This Week

(Coppell, TX) – The statewide gas price average in Texas is $2.25 for a gallon of regular unleaded fuel, according to the AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch. That price is six cents more than last week and 37 cents more per gallon than last year. Of the major metropolitan areas surveyed in Texas, drivers in Dallas and Ft. Worth are paying the most on average at $2.34 per gallon while drivers in San Antonio are paying the least at $2.15 per gallon. The national average price for a gallon of regular unleaded is $2.40 which is three cents more than last week and 32 cents more per gallon than last year.

Pump prices in 48 states and Washington D.C. have moved higher over the last week, led by the switch over to more expensive summer-blend gasoline and increased driving demand. Factors contributing to increased global crude oil prices include high production cut adherence by OPEC and non-OPEC producers and the possibility that participating countries may extend their agreement beyond the June deadline. An oilfield in Libya was shut down on Sunday after an armed group blocked a pipeline leading to an oil terminal. The Libyan production outage means that one source for crude oil is compromised and may affect global oil supply. The price of crude oil was also impacted following last week’s U.S. missile strike against a Syrian airbase and market watchers are watching to see how disruptions in the region could also impact global oil supply. Traders are keeping a close eye on political dynamics in the Middle East and any further discussions between OPEC and non-OPEC producers.

Despite the movement in global crude oil prices the least expensive gasoline prices continue to flow in South and Southeast states. Texas remains among the top ten states with the least expensive retail gas prices. Texans are paying 15 cents less per gallon of regular unleaded compared to the national average.

“Including car repairs as part of your household monthly budget may help you set aside savings if an unexpected repair or breakdown takes place,” said AAA Texas/New Mexico representative Sarah Schimmer. “Being ready for an unexpected repair or breakdown can ease the surprise and stress of the expense. Regular vehicle maintenance can aid in consistent performance, extend the life of your car and ensure fuel efficiency, keeping more money in your pocket in the long run.”
