The statewide gas price average in Texas is $2.45 per gallon for regular unleaded fuel, according to the AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch. That price is three cents more when compared to this day last week and is 27 cents less per gallon compared to this day last year. Of the major metropolitan areas surveyed in Texas, drivers in El Paso are paying the most on average at $2.67 per gallon while drivers in the Lubbock area are paying the least at $2.28 per gallon. The national average price for a gallon of regular unleaded is $2.85, which is one cent more when compared to this day last week and 28 cents less when compared to this day last year.
As winter weather continues to impact much of the country—including parts of Texas—gas prices remain relatively low as fewer drivers hit the road. Fuel prices are being kept in check by the lowest gasoline demand of the year and crude oil trading in the high $50 to low $60 range.
AAA Texas reminds drivers that during winter storms or winter travel, keeping at least half a tank of fuel is critical for safety, and that travel should be avoided altogether if roads are icy or unsafe.
“Gas prices have edged up slightly from last week, but they remain relatively low for this time of year in Texas,” said Daniel Armbruster, AAA Texas spokesperson. “Winter storms can quickly turn a routine drive into a dangerous situation, which is why drivers should keep at least half a tank of gas. That fuel can be critical for staying warm if you’re stranded and waiting for help.”
