AAA Texas: Statewide Gas Price Average Same As Last Week

(Coppell, TX) – The statewide gas price average in Texas is $1.53 for a gallon of regular unleaded fuel, according to the AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch. That price is the same as last week and 58 cents less per gallon than last year. Of the major metropolitan areas surveyed in the Lone Star State, drivers in Dallas are paying the most on average at $1.58 per gallon while drivers in Amarillo are paying the least at $1.41 per gallon. The national average price for a gallon of regular unleaded is $1.72 which is 55 cents less per gallon than last year.

Typical for this time of year, refinery production is beginning to drop as many refineries prepare for seasonal maintenance in advance of the summer driving season. In addition, some refineries reportedly have cut production because of abundant supplies and low prices. This decline in production has led to higher prices throughout the Midwest and slowed recent declines in the national average price of gas. Industry analysts expect this year’s spring maintenance season to peak in April, and pump prices are likely to rise in the coming months due to fluctuations in supply and demand associated with this process. However, unlike previous years, gasoline inventories are reportedly at higher-than-normal levels and the price of crude oil remains low. The combination of these two factors should help keep gas prices relatively low compared to recent years, though prices are likely to be a good deal higher by Memorial Day than they are today.

“Texans are now paying $21 to fill up the average 14-gallon size fuel tank which is about $8 less per fill up than last year,” said AAA Texas/New Mexico Representative Doug Shupe. “With these lower prices compared to recent years and the 100-year anniversary of the National Park System, travelers might want to consider a road trip to a National Park this coming spring and summer.”
