AAA Texas: Spring Break Travelers May Opt for Unique Destinations and Trends In 2017

(Coppell, TX) - Travelers are always looking for unique experiences that fit their budget. This year for Spring Break experts forecast a variety of destinations and trends travelers may choose to favor this year.

Spring Break is also a time where families as well as college students may take a road trip. In a AAA travel poll released late last year forecasting 2017 domestic travel trends, survey respondents said Florida was a desired destination. Texans wanting an in-state road trip or a “staycation” near their home are considering several Texas metro areas. Austin is always a top attraction with SXSW events, music festivals and state history to explore and the Houston/Galveston region is always desirable for vacationers wanting to experience food, arts, culture, the beach or board a cruise ship leaving Galveston.

Gas prices in Texas remain among the top ten least expensive averages in the country and the national average for a gallon of regular unleaded has remained in the $2.30 cent range for most of the last month. The average price for gas in Texas is $2.11 per gallon with the most expensive averages found in the Dallas area around $2.15 per gallon and the least expensive averages found in the San Antonio area around $2.03. Drivers in Texas can expect filling up typical family sized vehicle, or 14-gallon tank, for an average of $29.54.

In a recent travel poll, AAA travel agents identified these top trends for 2017: experiential travel, Canadian destinations, river cruising, and National Parks.

Both novice and expert travelers are looking for unique travel experiences that allow a deeper connection to the cultures, people and traditions. Some travelers are interested in booking tours that include opportunities to dine with local families or receive hands-on tutorials from local craftspeople.

Canada is an increasingly popular vacation destination, due to its close location and favorable currency exchange rates that make trips there affordable and accessible to more Americans. Canada will also celebrate its 150th birthday in 2017, offering visitors many opportunities to experience special events and learn more about the country’s history and traditions.

According to a AAA survey, four in 10 Americans would consider a river cruise for an upcoming vacation and 24 percent said they are likely to take a river cruise in the next five years.

The National Park Service celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2016. Following all-time record visitation in 2015, the national parks remain an attractive vacation destination for many. According to AAA, 79 percent of Americans say they are as likely or more likely to visit a national park through the first half of 2017, building on the momentum of last year’s centennial celebrations.
