The statewide gas price average in Texas is $2.66 per gallon for regular unleaded fuel, according to the AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch. That price is seven cents less compared to this day last week and is 36 cents less per gallon compared to this day last year. Of the major metropolitan areas surveyed in Texas, drivers in the El Paso area are paying the most on average at $2.81 per gallon while drivers in McAllen are paying the least at $2.39 per gallon. The national average price for a gallon of regular unleaded is $3.08, which is three cents less when compared to this day last week and 32 cents less per gallon when compared to this day last year.
Despite increased demand, gas prices dipped lower this week, with today’s statewide average 12 percent lower compared to this day last year. This drop at the pump comes as many travelers gear up to hit the road for spring break and drivers may be surprised to find gas under $3 in 31 states.
According to new data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA), gasoline demand increased from 8.87 million b/d last week to 9.18. Total domestic gasoline supply decreased from 246.8 million barrels to 241.1, leaving them slightly below seasonal averages. Gasoline production also decreased last week, averaging 9.6 million barrels per day.
"Despite increased demand, Texas drivers are seeing a welcome decrease in gas prices, with the statewide average now at $2.66 per gallon for regular unleaded fuel,” said Daniel Armbruster, AAA Texas spokesperson. “This is a notable drop from last year, providing much-needed relief as many prepare for spring break travels. Drivers will be delighted to see gas prices under $3 in 31 states, reflecting a broader trend of affordability at the pump."
