(Coppell, TX) – Beginning March 1, 2015, drivers wanting to renew their vehicle registrations in the Lone Star State will see changes to the process.  AAA Texas wants to remind drivers of the changes to prevent confusion and delays in renewing vehicle registrations.

First, vehicles will need to pass a state vehicle inspection before registration renewal.  Vehicle registration will now be contingent upon passing a state vehicle inspection.  Drivers will need a Verification of a Vehicle Inspection Report (VIR) from a vehicle inspection station along with other required documents to complete Texas vehicle renewal registration of cars and trucks, as well as motorcycles, RV’s and trailers.

Second, vehicle inspection stations will no longer collect the state’s portion of the inspection fee. Instead, the state’s portion will be collected at the time of registration or renewal.  Registration renewals will now have that fee printed on the renewal notice.

With these changes a vehicle’s registration sticker will serve as a combined proof of registration and inspection.  AAA Texas members can easily and quickly renew their vehicle registrations at select branch offices which are authorized to offer DMV services by local county officials.  For a list of AAA Texas branch offices that provide DMV services visit www.aaa.com.

The following is a list of required documents that will be needed to complete renewal registration at AAA Texas branch offices:

  • Registration renewal notice
  • Proof of current liability insurance
  • Vehicle registration fee
  • Vehicle Inspection Report (VIR)
