The statewide gas price average in Texas is $2.66 per gallon for regular unleaded fuel, according to the AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch. That price is three cents more compared to this day last week and is the same price per gallon compared to this day last year. Of the major metropolitan areas surveyed in Texas, drivers in the El Paso area are paying the most on average at $2.94 per gallon while drivers in Lubbock are paying the least at $2.41 per gallon. The national average price for a gallon of regular unleaded is $3.07, which is three cents more when compared to this day last week and three cents less per gallon when compared to this day last year.
Over the recent holiday season, more than 100 million Americans embarked on road trips of 50 miles or more, leading to a slight uptick in gas prices across Texas and much of the country. Historically, fuel price averages tend to decline as January progresses, a trend anticipated to resume later this month. However, price fluctuations remain a possibility.
“Gas price averages have increased in recent days due to a busy year-end holiday travel period,” stated Daniel Armbruster, spokesperson for AAA Texas. “Now that the holidays are behind us and many parts of the nation are facing colder temperatures, demand for fuel will likely decrease and gas price averages should follow.”
