The statewide gas price average in Texas is $2.78 per gallon for regular unleaded fuel, according to the AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch. That price is one cent lower than last week and is three cents more per gallon compared to this day last year. Of the major metropolitan areas surveyed in Texas, drivers in El Paso are paying the most on average at $3.08 per gallon while drivers in Lubbock are paying the least at $2.66 per gallon. The national average price for a gallon of regular unleaded is $3.20, which is one cent more than last week and one cent less per gallon when compared to this day last year.
According to new national data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA), gasoline demand increased from 8.50 million barrels per day last week to 8.81 million. Total domestic gasoline supply decreased from 220 million barrels to 217.6 million. Gasoline production decreased last week, averaging 9.4 million barrels per day. Domestic crude oil production and inventories are lower, while oil prices are staying below $65 a barrel.
“Despite some sharp price increases in a few metro areas, Texans continue to pay among the lowest gas prices in the U.S.,” said Daniel Armbruster, spokesperson for AAA Texas. “While demand for gasoline was up in the past week, we would expect it to decline heading later into the fall, which should help put downward pressure on pump prices.”
