The statewide gas price average in Texas is $2.87 for a gallon of regular unleaded fuel, according to the AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch. That price is 11 cents more than on this day last week and is 26 cents less per gallon compared to this day last year. Of the major metropolitan areas surveyed in Texas, drivers in El Paso are paying the most on average at $3.10 per gallon while drivers in Amarillo are paying the least at $2.60 per gallon. The national average price for a gallon of regular unleaded is $3.15, which is five cents more when compared to this day last week and 35 cents less than the price per gallon at this same time last year.
Crude oil is approximately $4 more per barrel compared to a month ago. In addition, the latest data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA) shows an increase in demand for fuel across the nation. Both factors are contributing to an increase in gas prices across Texas.
“Demand for fuel is strong and crude prices are more expensive, which has caused a further increase in gas price averages across the state,” said Daniel Armbruster, spokesperson for AAA Texas. "It remains to be seen if this will be a trend moving forward, but if crude oil prices remain elevated then gas prices will likely move higher.”
