The statewide gas price average in Texas is $2.80 per gallon for regular unleaded fuel, according to the AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch. That price is two cents more when compared to this day last week and is one cent less per gallon compared to this day last year. Of the major metropolitan areas surveyed in Texas, drivers in El Paso are paying the most on average at $3.18 per gallon while drivers in Laredo and San Angelo are paying the least at $2.64 per gallon. The national average price for a gallon of regular unleaded is $3.19, which is one cent less when compared to this day last week and six cents less per gallon when compared to this day last year.
Although the statewide average fuel price inched higher this past week, drivers are paying nearly the same as they did a year ago. With fall routines now in place, gasoline demand is easing—a trend that typically leads to lower pump prices. Ample crude oil supply continues to outpace demand, and the seasonal shift to less expensive winter-blend gasoline is now underway, both of which could put downward pressure on prices in the days to come.
“Even though we’ve seen a slight week-to-week increase, drivers are essentially paying what they were at this time last year,” said Daniel Armbruster, spokesperson for AAA Texas. “With demand tapering off after the busy summer travel season and the switch to winter-blend fuel beginning, motorists could see some relief at the pump in the weeks ahead.”
