The statewide gas price average in Texas is $2.78 per gallon for regular unleaded fuel, according to the AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch. That price is three cents less when compared to this day last week and is 13 cents less per gallon compared to this day last year. Of the major metropolitan areas surveyed in Texas, drivers in El Paso are paying the most on average at $3.17 per gallon while drivers in Lubbock are paying the least at $2.66 per gallon. The national average price for a gallon of regular unleaded is $3.20, which is one cent less when compared to this day last week and 12 cents less per gallon when compared to this day last year.
Gas prices are following a familiar fall trend, moving slightly lower after the Labor Day holiday and the close of the summer driving season. With demand easing and the upcoming transition to less expensive winter-blend gasoline later this fall, prices are expected to remain relatively steady—barring any major disruptions such as a Gulf Coast hurricane or geopolitical conflict. Steady crude oil prices in the low $60 range are also helping to limit upward pressure at the pump.
“We’re seeing the usual post-Labor Day shift, with gas prices moving down slightly,” said Daniel Armbruster, spokesperson for AAA Texas. “Prices have remained mostly steady through the summer and could trend lower in September as demand continues to ease.”
