AAA Texas: Gas Prices Dip Slightly, Remain $1.86 More Per Gallon From Year Ago

Coppell, TX Gas Prices, Monthly Fuel Prices Report, Weekly Fuel Prices Report
tx gas report-50 dollars and gas pump

The statewide gas price average in Texas is $4.60 for a gallon of regular unleaded fuel, according to the AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch. That price is nine cents less than on this day last week and is $1.86 more per gallon compared to this day last year. Of the major metropolitan areas surveyed in Texas, drivers in El Paso are paying the most on average at $4.89 per gallon while drivers in Laredo are paying the least at $4.24 per gallon. The national average price for a gallon of regular unleaded is $4.94, which is seven cents less when compared to this day last week and $1.87 more than the price per gallon at this same time last year.

Recently crude oil prices declined slightly but remain above $105 per barrel. While gas prices have slid week-to-week, price fluctuations are still possible as the busy Independence Day holiday weekend gets closer. Despite unusually high gas prices, AAA predicts a record 3.1 million Texans will drive 50 miles or more to celebrate the upcoming holiday, with 3.5 million Texans traveling in total. Weekly gasoline supply and demand reports have not been released as the Energy Information Administration stated that technical issues would prevent it from releasing its weekly Petroleum Status Report on Thursday.

“Texans are seeing minor relief at the gas pump with prices dropping an average of nine cents a gallon compared to last week,” said AAA Texas spokesperson Daniel Armbruster. “Prices could fluctuate as the busy Independence Day holiday approaches. Despite unusually high gas prices, automobile travel will set a new record in Texas, with 3.1 million Texans driving to their holiday destination. The record travel could put more pressure on demand at a time when supplies are very tight.”

Gas Tax Holiday Proposal

The ongoing efforts to waive federal and state taxes have been undertaken to provide consumers relief at the pump. However, external market and economic factors impact the price of oil, which plays a key role in determining the cost of gas. As a result, the impact of gas tax holiday proposals, whether state or federal, may be limited because any price reduction from the lack of taxes can be quickly offset by a steady increase in oil prices. In addition, if a gas tax holiday is implemented, it is unclear to what extent any savings would be passed along to the consumer or if there would be an impact to funds that are usually allocated for much needed infrastructure improvements.

Drivers in Texas are paying the 9th lowest gas price average in the country, according to gasprices.aaa.com. Meanwhile drivers in California are paying the most at $6.36 on average for a gallon over regular unleaded.

AAA Tips to save money on fuel:

Bad driving isn’t just unsafe. It’s expensive. Studies have repeatedly shown that personal driving habits are the single biggest factor that affects vehicle fuel consumption. Adopting new and improved driving behaviors can contribute to significant savings at the gas pump. Here are some simple ways drivers can improve fuel efficiency:

  • Slow down and drive the speed limit. Higher speeds result in more aerodynamic drag.
  • Avoid “jackrabbit” starts and hard accelerations. These actions greatly increase fuel consumption.
  • Use cruise control on the highway to help maintain a constant speed and save fuel. However, never use cruise control on slippery roads because a loss of vehicle control could result.
  • Minimize your use of air conditioning.
  • Avoid extended idling to warm up the engine, even in colder temperatures. It’s unnecessary and wastes fuel.
  • Download the AAA App to find the cheapest gas prices near you.
  • Maintain your car according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Regular service will ensure optimum fuel economy.
  • Make sure your tires are properly maintained and inflated to the correct level. Discount Tire, for example, offers free air checks at their shops.
  •  When driving in town, adjust your speed to “time” the traffic lights. This reduces repeated braking and acceleration that consume additional fuel.
  • When approaching a red light or stop sign, take your foot off the gas early and allow your car to coast down to a slower speed until it is time to brake.
