AAA Texas encourages people living along the Gulf Coast and in inland communities to be proactive during the official 2020 Atlantic Hurricane Season, which officially begins today June 1 and runs through Nov. 30.

“You don’t want to wait until a storm has already formed and is approaching to start planning,” said AAA Texas spokesperson Joshua Zuber. “Now is the time to update and review your family disaster plan, go over your insurance policies and gather supplies to protect your home and property, so you’re already prepared, should a storm head our way this season.”

A family disaster plan should be updated every school year and as places of employment or residence change. Special needs populations in Texas including those with medical needs, the elderly and disabled, can call 2-1-1 transportation assistance registry which is a state service that will provide help during an evacuation process.

In addition to a disaster plan, AAA Texas encourages families to have a disaster supply kit for this storm season. The kit should include bottled water, non-perishable food, first aid supplies, bedding, tools, flashlight, battery-powered radio, as well as prescription medications, diapers and baby formula, if needed.

AAA Texas also offers the following tips to help protect your property and speed your recovery in the event of a storm:

  • Read your homeowner’s insurance policy carefully so you know what coverage you have purchased.

  • Make a current inventory and list the items you own. Photograph or videotape each room and the exterior of your home, if possible. List item serial numbers when available.

  • Safeguard your records by keeping insurance policies and your inventory in a safe deposit box or other secure spot. Accurate records speed up claims processing and can help prove tax-deductible, uninsured losses.

  • Have a sufficient supply of bottled drinking water, dry and canned goods and toiletries. Power may be out for a few days; stores may be inaccessible and safe drinking water may be unavailable from the tap.

  • Plan for an evacuation if local authorities recommend or mandate evacuations.

  • Take important records with you. Have copies available of your homeowner, auto, health, and other insurance policies.
